Horse Boarding and Vacations

Recently I learned there is a whole new industry in tourism that I had never heard of before. This is basically bed and breakfast for both horse owners and horses. One place that once offered this kind of service was the White Pine Inn in Washington state. I don't think it is in business anymore, but when it was, it would board both a couple and their horses in a beautiful setting surrounded by many horse trails. This sounds like a real fun vacation idea if you own a horse, which I don't currently. However, I did when I was a child, and I can certainly see the attraction of such places!

Algeria

I've been reading a lot about Algeria recently and it is really a fascinating country. Despite political turmoil, it sounds as if it is a beautiful country with some dramatic geographical and historical features. Some things that most impressed me about Algeria is the number of women who have historically participated in sports in that country and the burgeoning olive oil industry. I imagine it is a real jewel in the Middle East that will have a lot to offer in the years to come. That is, if it is able to overcome substantial political issues in the region and industrialize effectively without losing a connection to its culture, history or people. It is really fun to learn about a new part of the world you have never known about, and I think I will aim to learn more about a country each month from now on to improve my knowledge of the world more generally. Algeria really sounds like a beautiful country and I hope to visit someday in the future when it is safe to do so.

Organic Soaps

I love the scent and feel of homemade soaps. If you have never tried a bar of handmade, organic soap, well, you are missing out - that's all you can say. Handmade soaps are much better for your skin and organic handmade soaps are even better all around. There are some great handmade soaps out there try, including such exotic scents as sage citrus and bay laurel.

If you are going to purchase some beautiful organic hand made soap, you should also consider getting a wooden soap dish to go with it, as there is nothing more beautiful than hand made soap sitting in a handmade wooden soap dish! I was pretty surprised to learn that you can actually get some great handcrafted soaps from places like Amazon.com, although I prefer to purchase mine at craft fairs and specialty shops. Anyway, if you haven't ever tried handmade soap, consider getting some today. You won't be sorry!

It's just a random compilation of random facts and stuff, but I found it to be quite interesting. The post I just read talked about who the first couple were that were portrayed together in a bed on television. Do you have any idea who that was?

As the blogger points out, this is probably because it was much less controversial to see a cartoon couple in bed than a real couple. Anyway, hope you enjoy the find too!

Cleansing: Is it Right for You?

Now that the holidays are almost on us, it might be a good time to think about doing a body cleansing or detoxification program before you indulge in all the holiday goodness. Thanksgiving is only a couple of weeks away, but you still have time to get in a ten day (or even five day) detoxification so you won't feel guilty when you start eating all the pie, cakes and cookies you know will soon be tempting you!

I just found this cool site: Cleansing for Life - which has some good tips on how to best do a cleansing program. As the author suggests, it is the first two or three days that is usually really hard when you start a cleanse, and there are some important tips and tricks to help you during the first tough days.

I did a cleanse back in August, and I'm seriously thinking about doing another one starting tomorrow! I think doing a cleanse every three months should be my goal from here on out. Wish me luck!

Just More Stuff

OK, here is some more random stuff to keep this blog active. I'm not by here that much, so these random posting will hopefully keep someone's attention.

I've started a new random thought blog here: Rainy and Sunny Days. There isn't much there yet as I just slapped it up yesterday and I'm still playing around trying to figure out what kind of theme I will have on it. It is a Wordpress blog and in case you don't know, there are literally thousands of themes to choose from. The one I'm using right now is called Jenny or something like that, but I'll probably play around quite a bit until I find one I like.

Some New Stuff Again

OK, I have some new stuff to publish. First, I found this interesting site all about wrought iron gazebo basics. I love how wrought iron looks, and it's good to learn about the steps you need to take to make sure they continue to stay beautiful year after year.

Also, for those of you with little ones, there's another great new site called Top Baby Tips that I've been visiting recently. I especially enjoyed the post they have there on attachment parenting. It's what I do with my son, and although it is a bit exhausting it has certainly been worth it. Highly recommended!

Finally, there is another lifestyle website that I recommend called Healthy and Easy Life. There is a great post there about body cleansing methods and what you need to think about before choosing a cleansing routine for yourself. I just finished a ten day cleanse myself and it was a wonderful experience.

Some New Sites I Like

I've been trolling other blogs on the internet, and thought I would post some information about a couple I really like. First, there is Taking Time To Write which is a new blog full of information about how to create a successful writing routine. This includes details such as time management, setting goals and other useful tips. I am putting a lot of the suggestions to work right now!

Second, another great informational type blog I found was Blue Moon Thoughts. Did you know the origin of the term "Once in A Blue Moon"? If not, you'll find the answer here. I was surprised. I'm guessing this site is going to be a wealth of information once it is developed!

I'm always on the lookout for new, interesting blogs on the internet, and I'm happy that I stumbled upon these gems in the past few days! Hope everybody is having a great end of summer. Can't believe fall is almost here!

Gardening Again

Well, a few days ago I finally pulled the black tarp off of my community garden plot, shoveled in a couple wheelbarrows of organic manure, and started seeds and seedlings in my community plot. My rhubarb plant from last year was going crazy, so I harvested a bunch of stalks from it as well which my husband used to make yummy rhubarb crumble.

Can't wait until the lettuce and radishes are ready - I'm craving some GOOD quality salads again, plus collards, chard, broccoli and tons of other goodness. I love to garden!

OK, here are two new cool sites that are worth mentioning. Both have a nice environmental edge to them and they are both pretty new as well. First, if you have a baby, you are likely wondering about what kind of diapers you should use. The answer is simple: cloth baby diapers. Really, there is NO reason to use disposable diapers. Cloth diapers are better for the environment, better for your baby and better for your pocket book.

Next, are you looking for a "green" way to heat your home, garage or shop? If so, take a look at waste oil heaters. These heaters work by using recycled or used oil, and are very economical as well to use!

I've been feeling kind of out of it lately, and the doctor doesn't seem to be able to find anything that's wrong. Swimming Pool Heat Pumps

OK. So I recently took my toddler for a swim. He loves to swim. I mean he REALLY loves to swim. But now that it is getting cold, there is a problem: he get's cold, his lips turn blue, he starts to shiver. But he still wants to swim!

I know that heating a pool must cost a lot of money, and that is probably why the people at our community pool don't turn the heat up. Still, I thought that I would look into whether there were any more environmentally friendly options in swimming pool heating other than cranking up the electric pool heater.

Turns out there are a few solutions. Recently there has been a surge of interest in swimming pool solar heaters, and manufacturers have complied and come up with several excellent models. There are also swimming pool heat pumps that are much more efficient than traditional swimming pool electric heaters.

So, it's good to know there are options!

I've Learned How to Fix a PS3 at Home!

So, my PS3 broke, which sucks. But what sucked any more is calling Sony and learning it was going to cost over $150 for them to just take a look at it and see if they could fix it, since it is now past the warranty period. So, what to do? Well, a friend told me he had fixed his PS3 himself using a repair guide. I looked around, and the one that I found that looked like the best was PS3 Repaired. It was cheap, costing less than $25, and they offered a full money refund if I was not able to fix my PS3 in under an hour.

That sounded like too good of a deal to pass up, so I purchased it, downloaded it, and then got to work on my PS3. It turns out that PS3 troubleshooting is not that hard if you have the right information, and I was able to fix my PS3 display problem in under an hour. Now that I know how easy it is to fix a PS3 yourself, I'm almost ready to start my own PS3 repair business!

Time for a New Down Comforter

When the weather starts to get cold, I (like many others) crave a comfortable and cozy bed. This has got me shopping for cheap down comforters online. There is a lot of variety out there, I have found, but the quality varies quite a bit. Some of the features you have to look very carefully at include the fill power, stitching pattern, quality of down and quality of the materials constructed. A horrible $25 down comforter is not as good as a quality made $100. Fortunately there are some good deals on cheap down comforters online.

I'm particularly interested in the nice microfiber down comforter models that are available. These often have allergy resistance built into them, which is great, and they are easy to clean as well!

Shed Plans

I was recently visiting the Wooden Garden Sheds blog, and realized there was some great information about how to find great wooden shed plans online. There is one deal where you can get over 12,000 shed plans for about $47, which sounds like a really good plan for me (that's what? a few cents a plan I think).

One of the nice things about this shed plan deal is you can download them immediately. So if you are someone like me, who likes instant gratification, then they will be a great deal.

Building a wooden shed is a great starter woodworking project for those who would like to learn basic carpentry skills, but have little experience. Plus, as a bonus, you have some wonderful space to store tools, seeds and more once it is finished. I hope to build a wooden garden shed myself this coming spring and I'm definitely going to check out these plans!

First, in terms of learning how to grow grapes, here is a great article on Growing Grapes for Wine. I found a lot of the tips to be useful while dreaming about planting my own vineyard. And there is another one on hubpages, about How to Plant Grapes that is also pretty useful too.

And on the topic of natural fertility treatment, there is a great article on acupuncture and IVF. I had no idea that scientific research had shown acupuncture to be so useful in treating fertility, but it certainly is promising research! Also, you can visit the hub on natural fertility treatments for some great discussion of a variety of different methods. Finally, there is this hub on natural fertility remedies at Squidoo that has some very useful information as well!

Wooden Boat Plans

I have a dream of building a beautiful wooden boat someday by hand. I know that many others share this dream as well. What I think holds me back, however, if the fear that if I tried this dream could easily turn into a nightmare.

Luckily I just found a great website all about wooden boat plans. As the author points out, the key to wooden boat building is having the right plans. There are many free wooden boat plans available on the internet, but you have no idea if these plans work or not, or if you end up (quite literally) sinking your time, money and energy into a boat that doesn't float. (If I were to start building a boat today, I would probably be most interested in plywood boat plans, since it seems like the best way to start).

Finding a good, reliable source of wooden boat plans is crucial to boat building success, and hopefully soon my boat building dream will turn into a reality!

How to Grow Grapes

I have to admit that among all the homesteading fantasies I have, learning how to grow grapes is one of my favorites. Perhaps this is because I also enjoy home brewing, and I would love to make my own wine from my own grapes someday. Of course, growing grapes for wine is a major undertaking, and if you decide to do it you should make sure you know what you are doing before you lose several years of invested time in your vineyard project.

Why I Compost...

Not everyone composts their kitchen and yard waste, but every one should. Composting is the right choice for the environment, but there are other benefits as well. For one, it produces "black gold" - that is, rich compost that can be used on everything from houseplants to vegetable gardens to flowers and trees. This compost will make your garden healthier and more productive, your zucchini will literally go wild and rhubarb, pumpkins and most every other plant will benefit from a little as well.

One of the excuses people often give not to compost is that they do not have the space available. This, however, is very unlikely, especially given the huge variety of small back porch compost tumbler bins and similar composting models available that are built specifically for small spaces. These units are very affordable, but even if you don't have the money to purchase a small back porch compost tumbler for your home or apartment, there are ways to build a small compost bin for yourself for very little money. Thinking about a Paternity Test?

If you watch any daytime TV, you'll know that paternity testing is a popular subject filled with drama and tears. But what if you want to do a paternity test in a bit more private setting? Brrr... it's getting cold, and my garage is not a fun place to be when it is cold. So I'm starting to have electric garage heaters envy. These neat devices can be installed on the roof or wall in your garage, and can make your garage a cozy, cozy place without worrying about propane fumes and venting issues. They are very safe to use, and incredibly efficient as well.

Amazon.com apparently has some great electric garage heater selections. Funny, I still think of Amazon as a place to buy books and music, but I know that in reality it is much, much more. Cheap Wooden Sheds

Baby Heart Monitors

In recent years, many of my friends who have become pregnant have been interested in using one of the new home baby heart monitor devices now available. Initially I was skeptical about these units, and during my own pregnancy chose not to use any kind of ultrasound until up to the delivery. I am still skeptical, but there are some compelling reasons to consider using a fetal heartbeat monitor.

One reason often given is that a prenatal heart monitor can warn expectant parents if there is an irregular heartbeat, signaling that something is potentially wrong with the baby. Parents can take quick action, and possibly save their baby's life by getting immediate medical treatment when a problem is detected in this way.

Another reason often cited is that a baby heartbeat doppler devices can help parents bond better with their unborn child. I, personally, am skeptical of this claim. You can bond with the unborn in many ways, through singing, touching, talking, feeling kicks and more, and I don't think "modern technology" like a baby heart monitor is necessary for good parental bonding to take place (in fact, I suspect it may even hinder it a bit). Still, I guess it works for some.

Backpack Vacuum Cleaners

I recently went shopping for a new vacuum cleaner, and was surprised by the variety of types available. One of the most interesting models I saw, was one of the new type of backpack vacuum cleaners that are now on the market.

If you are like me, you may have never considered purchasing a backpack vacuum cleaner before. After all, my parents had an upright vacuum, I've always used an upright vacuum, what more is there to want? Well, I have to say I was quite impressed by the backpack type.

First of all, I thought back pack vacuums might be very heavy, but I was really wrong. The model I tried on weighed less than 10 pounds (the ProTeam Sierra model). I could hardly even tell it was on! Next, I was amazed at the filtration system on this machine. I also thought that backpack vacuum cleaners might be bulky and difficult to move about in - wrong again!

I can easily see the benefits of these types of vacuums. They would make vacuuming the stairs in my home a breeze, I could walk outside to the car with one on and vacuum it as well, and easily reach into cupboards, closets, under couches, and not have to worry about tight corners either. This is definitely an item that is going on my holiday wish list!
